Game 51: Germany 4-1 England

I can't stress this enough. England are overrated! Before the tournament started, I predicted my top 5 teams and England were not one of them. They were close but it was because I thought this was their best chance since players like Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and John Terry are in their prime. I was wrong. Since their first game against USA, I knew they were nowhere close to winning it. Germany exposed all possible weaknesses in the English defence in this game and expert finishing for all their 4 goals once again put them through to the quarter finals. Say what you want about bad refereeing decisions in this game (which clearly were bad), but the way England played their 4 games, there was nothing at all to convince that they are going to be champions. Players like Emile Heskey and Matthew Upson shouldn't be picked at all while the press should just shut up with all the hype about Wayne Rooney who was pretty useless throughout the 4 games. Man of the Match: Thomas Muller (scored 2 well taken goals and had the assist for another, very hardworking and always providing an option during a German attack - great performance from the young lad)

Game 52: Argentina 3-1 Mexico

After this game, I'd like to suggest FIFA that it is time to have video replays for officials to review. It is totally unacceptable to have glaring mistakes by officials at a World Cup and especially on the same day. Argentina's first goal was extremely fortunate not to be disallowed. Mexico started brightly in this match and almost had the lead in the early stages but once Argentina got into their stride, there was no stopping them. Mexico were unfortunate to concede the first goal but they clearly shot themselves in the foot by presenting their opponents a second goal. After that, Argentina looked in total control and once Carlos Tevez scored probably the best goal in the tournament so far, there was no way back for the Mexicans. They got a consolation through Javier Hernandez but that's about all they could come up with. Argentina face Germany in a fascinating quarter final encounter as both teams have shown that they are the best when it comes to scoring goals. Man of the Match: Carlos Tevez (his first goal was controversial but his second undeniably secured victory and his all-round performance was excellent from start to finish)

Game 49: Uruguay 2-1 South Korea

If anything was to be taken out of this game, I'd say the World Cup has finally warmed up. A great game, especially in the second half where South Korea showed a lot of quality in order to get that equaliser. I thought they were going to steamroll past their opponents once they got it but Uruguay came out of their shell and relentlessly applied pressure on the Korean defence. It paid off but it took a wonder goal to break Korean hearts who had a great chance to level things up again late on but it wasn't meant to be. South Korea's players should hold their heads up for a more than decent performance in this World Cup and with a little more luck, things could have been better. Man of the Match: Luis Suarez (scored both his team's goals; one needed composure while the other needed sheer brilliance and he showed both)

Game 50: USA 1-2 Ghana

This result surprised me a little. Well, maybe not because I thought this was an evenly-contested match to begin with anyway and it showed. But the Americans' lack of concentration in the early stages of a game have cost them in this competition. Ghana, meanwhile, played brilliantly in the first half and deserved their lead but once again USA showed pure determination to get back to level terms. But Asamoah Gyan's well taken goal in extra time proved to be enough to sink their opponents. They take on Uruguay in the quarter finals. It should be an interesting game and whoever scores first would have to show good organization in defence to come out tops. Man of the Match: Richard Kingson (Ghana's goalkeeper single-handedly kept Ghana in the lead for a long periods in this game and only got beaten by a penalty)

Game 45: North Korea 0-3 Ivory Coast

The African side went into the game as if the 9 goal swing that was required for them to progress was going to be a reality. They started off hot - attacking the Koreans at will and perhaps with a little more quality and composure, they would have scored 3 within the first 20 minutes. It wasn't meant to be but the Ivorians can count themselves unlucky. A win against Portugal would have see them through to the Round of 16. North Korea, meanwhile, truly showed why they are the lowest ranked team in the competition. But then again, qualifying for the World Cup itself can be considered a great achievement.

Game 46: Portugal 0-0 Brazil

Both these teams played as though it was a practice match. Unbelievable. A very boring game. The Portuguese defended the whole game as they knew they only needed a draw to progress. In other words, a pathetic game especially when fans expect quality football from both sides. Brazil play Chile in the Round of 16 and must step up offensively after this poor attacking performance. Portugal play Spain and Ronaldo might just fancy his chances against some familiar faces but I still think Spain would be strong enough to beat them. Man of the Match: Lucio (Brazil's skipper defended brilliantly at times and showed good skill to bring the ball up the field on a few occasions)

Game 47: Chile 1-2 Spain

The world number 2 team in football showed their weaknesses against pacey attacking teams. Chile were on top for a good part of 20 minutes and Spain were struggling to keep up. But against the run of play, the excellent David Villa once again showed why he is one of the best strikers in the world. The way he scored the first takes a lot of pure good timing and skill. Setting up the second goal for his team was the icing on the cake. The game fizzled out especially in the last 15 minutes as both teams knew they were going through. Spain must look out for Ronaldo's pace especially on the counter attack if they are to get past Portugal. Chile must cut out defensive errors against Brazil. If they do, it will be a very close match. Man of the Match: David Villa (scored a great goal and sets up the other - what more can you ask for)

Game 48: Switzerland 0-0 Honduras

The Swiss showed they are a side that just cannot score goals. That 1 goal they scored against Spain was just a fluke. Their negative play cost them, just like how it cost Greece. Simply not good enough when going forward and deserve to go out. Honduras, like North Korea and New Zealand, were just happy to play in the World Cup. Elimination were written all over them before they even kicked a ball in South Africa. But credit to them, they battled hard each game just like the All Whites and deserved their solitary point against the Swiss.

Defending Champions Go Home, Paraguay Top Group, Dutch Stay Perfect, Japan Stun Danes

Game 41: Slovakia 3-2 Italy

Hah! Another shocking result at this year's World Cup. The Azzurri finally showed their age and lack of pace against the much younger and more determined Slovakian team. Fabio Cannavaro looks way off his pace in this game and I guess it's about time he retired. Italy has got to scout for new, younger talent from now on and stop relying on the oldies. Well done to Slovakia, though. It's their first ever World Cup and they have stunned one of the giants in football. Next up for them is Netherlands and while they can provide a scare or two for the Dutch defence, I just don't see them causing another surprise.

Game 42: Paraguay 0-0 New Zealand

This was probably one of the more quiet games in terms of goalmouth action. Paraguay dominated possession but had no goals to show for it. I gotta give credit to New Zealand's goalkeeper Mark Paston, though. He struggled in the first game but in the next 2 he was very good and made some decent saves to give his team 3 points and stay unbeaten. They probably need a lot more firepower upfront if they qualify for the next World Cup. Paraguay take on Japan next and should be strong enough to progress to the quarter finals.

Game 43: Cameroon 1-2 Netherlands

Hard luck for the African nation. They were good going forward in the first two games but defensive errors cost them and they were already eliminated before this game and had nothing but pride to play for. Again, they were not solid enough at the back and the Dutch punished them without even playing their best football. But with Arjen Robben now back from injury, the other teams should look out for Netherlands because with him starting, it brings a totally different dimension to the team with his pace, dribbling skills, and good long shots.

Game 44: Denmark 1-3 Japan

I underestimated Asian teams, especially Japan. They were really awful during friendlies and even though they won against Cameroon, they were playing rather defensively in that game. But against Denmark, they played out their tactics perfectly and troubled the Danish defence with their pace upfront. 2 wonderful free kicks and neat teamwork destroyed the Danes who look as old as the Italians in the final third. Japan are up against Paraguay and once again must be strong in defence if they are going to have any hope of progressing. But then again, they might surprise me one more time. Man of the Match: Kaisuke Honda (scored a marvelous free kick to give his team the lead, nice footwork to set-up Japan's third, and was a constant thorn in the Danish defence)

Game 37: Slovenia 0-1 England

I thought England were going to be knocked out based on their performance in the first 2 games and the first 15 minutes against Slovenia. Somehow, they managed to play good football for about half an hour before going back to their boring style of launching long hopeful balls forward. I don't see why so many people are optimistic about their chances. Sure, their defence is solid but they find it so difficult to score. Slovenia, meanwhile, were just not good enough and didn't look like scoring and they probably knew they were going through right up until the Americans scored in injury time against Algeria. Hard luck. England take on Germany in the Round of 16 and I predict Germany to edge England - probably on penalties. Man of the Match: Steven Gerrard (no doubt the best player as he was absolutely hardworking, was involved in some decent attacks, and was by far England's best passer throughout the game)

Game 38: USA 1-0 Algeria

Wow! Unbelievable way to get yourselves into the Round of 16. For 90 minutes, everyone thought Slovenia were through with England out of Group C but Landon Donovan had other ideas I guess. But to me, they deserved this. They don't play the best football out there, but when their backs are against the wall, they never give up and go all out to seek that important goal(s). Algeria never looked threatening enough in the final third of the pitch as always. Looks like it's back to the drawing board for them and maybe they can do better in 4 years.

Game 39: Ghana 0-1 Germany

This game started slowly as both teams knew exactly what was at stake. Germany definitely couldn't afford to lose and didn't play their best attacking football. But in the end, they deserved the win and eventually the top spot in the group. Ghana also go through and will be the only African nation in the Round of 16 barring a miracle turn of events in favour of Ivory Coast. Ghana look good value but must be more clinical upfront if they are to match Cameroon's feat of reaching the quarter finals in 1990. Ghana play USA and I think that should be an interesting match-up between 2 evenly matched teams. Germany, meanwhile, would warmly welcome Miroslav Klose back into the starting lineup after a disappointing performance from Cacau against Ghana. Man of the Match: Mesut Oezil (again the best player for Germany as he was hardworking as ever and scored one of the best goals in the tournament so far)

Game 40: Australia 2-1 Serbia

A good win for the Aussies after failing to live up to pre-tournament expectations that they would give the Germans a fright for top spot. Having said that, I just don't think they have talent upfront apart from Tim Cahill. Their defence is a little slow at times and goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is way past his prime. Serbia probably disappointed me the most. I expected a lot from them but they didn't show their qualifying form. Strikers were wasteful and midfield was overrun on a lot of occasions. So, both teams go home and hope for a better performance in Brazil 2014 should they make it.

Uruguay Top Group, France Go Home In Shame, Argentina Breach Stubborn Greek Defence, Nigeria Miss Out

Game 33: Mexico 0-1 Uruguay

I thought this would end up as a draw since both teams needed it to go through but this result didn't change anything and proved that South American teams are the ones to beat this year. In my opinion, Uruguay's top spot in Group A is well deserved as they were clearly the best team in the group and it showed against the Mexicans. Credit to the Mexicans as they are not far behind in terms of quality. Having said that, they are up against Argentina and it could be tough to hold the most impressive team in the tournament so far. Uruguay are up against South Korea and that could be an interesting game with the Koreans putting more emphasis on scoring goals themselves rather than not conceding goals.

Game 34: France 1-2 South Africa

Well done, hosts! Finally a win for them and it was deserved although France were bogged by getting a man sent off relatively early in the match. But then again, France have been absolutely poor and nowhere near the team that got to the final in 2006. Disharmony in the team and poor form from star player Franck Ribery led them to achieve only a point and score a single goal. Awful. For South Africa, they shouldn't be disheartened and with a little more luck they would have qualified for the knockout stage. They should build on this and the main goal now is to be in Brazil in 2014. Man of the Match: Katlego Mphela (finally showed what he can do on the pitch after much being said about him before the tournament, scored a goal and was unlucky not to score another and was lively throughout)

Game 35: Greece 0-2 Argentina

Argentina showed that they cannot be stopped even when there's a team with 6 or 7 defenders playing against them unlike Spain who couldn't break down a stubborn and organized defence. But I'm absolutely clueless about Greece's aim to defend when they actually needed to win to progress. I just can't understand why they had no ambition whatsoever to score. Were they really hoping to draw their match and hope that Nigeria win against South Korea? But even then, when South Korea were leading, Greece never showed any intent to score. Unbelievable. Argentina face Mexico next and should win since some of their starters are fresh from getting a good rest. Greece now aim to qualify for Euro 2012 but I wish for them NOT to qualify because they are by far the most boring and defensive team in this World Cup - Switzerland doesn't even come close. Man of the Match: Clemente Rodriguez (given a start and took the advantage to shine with a more than decent performance - providing width down the left, cutting infield when having the ball and provided an option when the team was going forward)

Game 36: Nigeria 2-2 South Korea

A good match although I didn't really watch the whole of it. Both teams set out on scoring goals and didn't sit back. Nigeria have only themselves to blame for getting an unnecessary sending off in the previous match when they were leading and missing chance after chance in this game. Yakubu, in my opinion, had the miss of all time. With a gaping goal from four yards out, he missed. Had that gone in, they would have qualified since Greece lost. The Koreans, meanwhile, need to tighten up at the back against Uruguay, who have a decent attacking lineup, or else they are going home after the Secound Round.

North Korea Embarrassed, Swiss Clean Sheet Streak Ends, Spain Outclass Honduras

Game 30: Portugal 7-0 North Korea

The most lopsided outcome at this year's tournament and most definitely the worst defensive performance by a team since Saudi Arabia's 8-0 defeat to Germany 8 years ago. The Koreans gave a good account of themselves in the first half but after Portugal got the first goal, the floodgates just opened. I'd have to say, the North Korean defence was astonishingly awful in the second half. Too many gaps were appearing at the back and the organized defence that was apparent against Brazil just went missing for 45 minutes. Portugal really took advantage of it and scored probably 4 or 5 easy goals thanks to defensive lapses. Portugal play Brazil in their last group game and a draw would take them through. North Korea, meanwhile, will have to improve their defence drastically against Ivory Coast to restore some badly battered pride. Man of the Match: Fabio Coentrao (the Portuguese left back run the North Korean defence ragged with his explosive runs down the left flank and provided 3 assists for his team - an excellent performance)

Game 31: Chile 1-0 Switzerland

Finally, the Swiss defence has been breached! After 4 matches and 75 minutes into this game, the Swiss have conceded a goal at the World Cup. A great performance by Chile once again as they took advantage of having an extra player on the pitch and perhaps should have won by a bigger margin. Switzerland defended brilliantly at times but somehow, something's got to give at some point of time. Chile are up against reigning European champions Spain in their last group game and a draw will ensure their place in the knockout stage. Switzerland meet Honduras and must come up with a better offensive performance and be much less defensive to get that all important win that might see them through to the Second Round. Man of the Match: Alexis Sanchez (perhaps a little selfish at times but once again was excellent as he was always at the heart of Chile's attacking moves and his runs invoked fear into the Swiss defence time and time again)

Game 32: Spain 2-0 Honduras

Spain somewhat redeemed themselves after that shocking loss to Switzerland. They played really well right up until the 70th minute where they really took their foot off the pedal. Could have scored at least 5 goals by then. Instead they got 2 and I'm really surprised that they didn't push for a third or maybe even a fourth goal because it will come down to goal difference if they want to top their group. Honduras lacked the final pass when they were going forward and were rather lucky at the back at times. Spain now play Chile in a game they must win and if they do they would definitely beat Chile on goal difference but must watch out for Switzerland who are up against Honduras in the race to top the group. Man of the Match: David Villa (without doubt the best player - scored 2 goals, created chances for himself and his teammates, lively throughout - apart from missing a penalty which would have sealed his hat-trick)

Game 27: Slovakia 0-2 Paraguay

This has been a great tournament for South American teams so far. Paraguay were just too solid in this game and Slovakia, once again, showed no desire to score goals when they really needed to. The game fizzled out in the second half as Paraguay opted to sit on their lead but when the chance arrived, they killed the game off in the second. In fact, they didn't need to work hard at all and if they can come up with their first half performance in this game more often, they will go far. Slovakia play Italy next and would have to come up with a lot more attacking football or else they are going home early. Paraguay are up against New Zealand next and should be strong enough to take all 3 points and top the group. Man of the Match: Lucas Barrios (provided a superb pass for the first goal and showed great teamwork and understanding upfront with Roque Santa Cruz and Nelson Valdez where they were troubling the Slovakian defence in the first half)

Game 28: Italy 1-1 New Zealand

Well done, All Whites! This is unbelievable. They actually have a chance to qualify for the Second Round when almost everyone, including me, had written off their chances right from the start of the tournament. Italy, in truth, played badly after scoring the equaliser. Stray pass after stray pass paved the way to another big shock at this year's World Cup. The Kiwis defended brilliantly for most part of the game and showed that better ranked teams doesn't have any guarantee that they will win against them easily. Italy must win against Slovakia to confirm their place in the knockout stage and they would have to play much better offensively in order to do that. New Zealand would do well to hold Paraguay and if they do, I wouldn't be surprised anymore. Man of the Match: Mark Paston (was much better than he was against Slovakia and made the saves - good ones at that - when called upon)

Game 29: Brazil 3-1 Ivory Coast

That's enough criticism about the current football style of Brazil now. Zip it! They proved their critics wrong with a wonderful performance which probably match the performance put up by their arch rivals, Argentina. They were simply too good for the Ivorians who had no answer at all until late in the second half. Luis Fabiano finished one goal off clinically and showed awesome skills to score his second and Elano coolly slotted the third after a superb cross from Kaka who was later wrongly sent off. Their defence became complacent after that but were solid enough throughout the match and are the second team confirmed for the Second Round. They play Portugal in their last game and like the Dutch, would surely give their fringe players a chance to shine as they only need a draw to top their group. Ivory Coast would hope for a favourable result when Portugal and North Korea meet tomorrow and when they play the Koreans in their last group game, they would have to defend better and inject some pace and better incisiveness when attacking or else it is quite likely that no African country will be among the last 16. Man of the Match: Luis Fabiano (scored 2 good goals and played well alone upfront and connected well with the supporting cast of Kaka, Elano, and Robinho)

Game 24: Netherlands 1-0 Japan

Another game, another goalkeeping error. How many times has that happened at this year's World Cup? I'm sure it's all because of the unpredictability of the Jabulani ball. This match was rather dull as the Dutch played at a slower than usual tempo again and I can't stress this more - they do miss Arjen Robben. There's a distinct lack of pace when they went forward before Ibrahim Affelay and Eljero Elia came on. Japan, meanwhile, showed some fight after going a goal down and to be fair, I think they did well and perhaps with a little better finishing, they might have got something out of the game. Netherlands play Cameroon next and would definitely rest some starters as they only need a draw to top the group. Japan play Denmark in a winner-takes-all match and would have to defend better as they only need a draw to progress to the knockout stage. Man of the Match: Wesley Sneijder (nobody stood out actually but by being sort of a threat and scoring the winning goal, he gets this award for me)

Game 25: Ghana 1-1 Australia

Yet another goalkeeping error. This time by the Ghanaian goalkeeper. Having said that, Australia deserved their lead at that time as they started well and were looking for the opening goal from the start but unfortunately, they had a man sent off in the first half yet again but this time it was a correct decision. Ghana played well after that and perhaps should have taken the chances that they created in the second half. Australia defended much much better considering they got mauled by the Germans in their previous game. Ghana meet Germany in their last group game in a group where every team still has a genuine chance. Ghana would have to fight hard against a much better opposition and a draw will take them through. Australia, meanwhile, take on Serbia and will have to win by a 2 or 3 goal margin if they are to go through. They would need to have 11 men on the pitch for 90 minutes to do that or else it's goodbye to the team from Down Under. Man of the Match: Asamoah Gyan (the striker scored a crucial penalty and was a constant threat to the Australian defence - creating chances for himself and other teammates)

Game 26: Cameroon 1-2 Denmark

Probably the best game with a lot of end-to-end action especially in the second half. It has to be said that both defences were pretty shaky, though. Very hardly contested match and it was good to see a lot of attacking football from both sides which is very rare at the World Cup so far. Denmark showed that experienced players have benefits for the team as Dennis Rommedahl put in a great performance to give his country hope for progressing from the group stage. Cameroon should have taken at least one out of the numerous chances that they had in the second half and now are the first team to go out of the competition and have themselves to blame for being tactically wrong and rather poor in their overall play in the first game against Japan. They meet the Ducth next and perhaps must show some good football to salvage some pride. Denmark must be better in defence where they have been sloppy at times against Japan in a game they must win to progress. Man of the Match: Dennis Rommedahl (a great run behind the fullback and good cross after that for the team's first goal, superb finish to score his team's second, showed pace to trouble the opposition - what more can you ask for?)

Germany On The Wrong Side Of Bad Refereeing, Americans Fight Back For Draw, Toothless England Held

Game 21: Germany 0-1 Serbia

So far the officiating of the matches by the referees have been generally good. Not many bad decisions that changed a course of a game. But this game was one of the worst performances by a referee I've ever seen. 7 yellow cards and 1 red card. The red card was absolute nonsense - it was just a foul. It was not even a dangerous tackle or a cynical one. A few, if not most, of the yellow cards shown to players were also just that - normal fouls that didn't warrant a card at all. Serbia took advantage of an extra player but Germany should really have drawn the game had they converted a penalty they had. Germany meet Ghana in their last group match and they would have to win if they are to progress. Serbia meet the Aussies next and have a great chance of progressing since Australia don't look good enough to score goals let alone win games. Man of the Match: Neven Subotic (excellent at the back where he made some crucial tackles and interceptions to thwart the German offence)

Game 22: Slovenia 2-2 USA

Another great game. Slovenia were very good in the first half while the USA were simply atrocious at times. The Europeans had a deserved 2-0 lead going into halftime and really should have sealed the game in the second half. Having said that, the Americans were very, very good in the second half and fought back valiantly to cancel out the 2 goal deficit. They perhaps should have won the game had the referee not disallow a goal for a foul which a lot of people don't agree with, including me. But well, what's a World Cup without bad decisions from referees, eh? Slovenia meet England and only need a draw to qualify while USA meet Algeria in a match they have to win. Man of the Match: Michael Bradley (this award could have gone to a Slovenian player, but the American's tenacity and desire to go forward from midfield paid off as he scored the important equaliser)

Game 23: England 0-0 Algeria

Perhaps the most disappointing performance from England under Fabio Capello's management. Absolutely poor. Wayne Rooney was rubbish compared to what he's been doing at his club while the midfield had no bite at all and showed a lack of desire to win the game. Algeria actually played well considering they were written off before the game and so many people expected them to get trashed. They had a few half chances themselves, were tactically astute and well organized at the back. If they had a a forward who is more composed and stronger, they probably would have caused more problems for England. The Three Lions meet Slovenia and if they continue with this sort of performance, they are out of the World Cup for sure. Algeria play USA and qualification is out of their hands even if they win. So, most likely, Algeria are going to be eliminated. Man of the Match: Nadir Belhadj (very good down Algeria's left flank as he showed pace and some skill to cause trouble for the English defence and was solid at the back when called upon)

Game 18: Argentina 4-1 South Korea

This match showcased the pure talent and class from Argentina's offence that you would have expected at the World Cup. Absolutely amazing at times when going forward. Left the Korean defence in sixes and sevens at times and probably should have won by a bigger margin to be honest. The Koreans weren't bad going forward themselves, especially in the second half, but their defence was average at best. They couldn't stop Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, and Gonzalo Higuain from creating havoc. Argentina now only need a draw against Greece to top their group and I expect Diego Maradona to give his fringe players a chance to shine. South Korea, meanwhile, meet Nigeria in a do-or-die match. Whoever wins will almost certainly qualify for the Second Round as I don't see Greece beating Argentina. Man of the Match: Gonzalo Higuain (scored a real poacher's hat-trick and his movement off the ball was good, made up for the chances he missed in the first game against Nigeria; currently top scorer, so, good for him)

Game 19: Greece 2-1 Nigeria

From the start, I knew Greece were going to struggle to get a goal. And when Nigeria scored, I thought the Greeks are on the way out of the World Cup. A very stupid sending off for Nigeria's Sani Kaita just after half an hour proved to be the turning point. Credit to the Greek side's tactics after the sending off as they took off a defender and put in a striker to go for the win. Got a lucky first goal and for a long time I thought Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama was going to deny the Greeks that important second goal. He was spectacular in goal, keeping out the Greeks with a few great saves but as we've seen quite often at this year's World Cup, a goalkeeping error led to a goal. It was so unfortunate that it had happened to the best goalkeeper of the tournament by far - now he's only going to be remembered for making the error instead of making superb saves in both matches that he has played. If Nigeria beat the South Koreans and Greece lose to Argentina, though, Nigeria will make it through and all would be forgotten. But first, the Nigerians need to show better discipline and better finishing if they are to win their next match. Greece got lucky with the sending off today and played extremely well after that but I don't expect them perform the way they did today against Argentina let alone win the game. Man of the Match: Vincent Enyeama (apart from his error, he was once again outstanding and had a brilliant save in the second half which was, at this stage, the best save of the tournament; his performance kept his side in the tournament because in my opinion, goal difference will play a big part in this group)

Game 20: France 0-2 Mexico

Once again the French were uninspiring. Very poor while going forward. They have no creative spark in midfield and star Franck Ribery is having a miserable tournament by his standards. Mexico, on the other hand, totally deserve their win and showed intent to score while going forward. Although their first goal was a rather touch-and-go decision by the linesman, their determination and effort in the game were rewarded by their opposition's lack of commitment throughout the game. Mexico meet Uruguay next in what could be a match where both teams just play out a draw so that both teams progress while France would have to go all out against the hosts and hope for the best. Man of the Match: Carlos Salcido (did very well down the left flank where the French defence struggled to contain his marauding runs and had 2 decent shots at goal as well)

Chile Show Class, Spain Stunned in One of Football's Greatest Upsets, and Uruguay Too Strong For Hosts

Game 15: Honduras 0-1 Chile

Expected the South Americans to outclass the Hondurans and they truly delivered. I thought Chile were the best attacking team in the tournament so far apart from Germany and Argentina. Could have scored a few more goals had they not been so wasteful in front of goal. Honduras, meanwhile, just looked out of place throughout the match. Defended well at times but that's about all they can be pleased about. Chile would find it much tougher to play their fluent attacking style against Switzerland while Honduras look like they are going to be run over by Spain (especially after what happened to Spain). Man of the Match: Alexis Sanchez (excellent throughout, his runs and dribbling caused trouble to the Honduras defence and was part of Chile's best moves more often than not)

Game 16: Spain 0-1 Switzerland

Unbelievable! That's the biggest shock of the tournament for sure. Unless of course the Swiss go on to win it. Spain weren't at their best. No penetrative killer passes that split defences. Nowhere near the style they displayed during Euro 2008. My top pick has disappointed me. Switzerland were absolutely solid but I hated the way they play. Sorry for being biased but I can't take teams that defend for 89 minutes and taking that 1 minute to go forward and score a goal. Spain would need to attack like mad in their next game against Honduras and score a few goals as well. Switzerland would do well to hold Chile scoreless next up. By the way, the Swiss have now gone 5 games without conceding a goal at the World Cup. Man of the Match: Stephan Lichtsteiner (absolutely rock solid in defence and kept winning important headers whenever the Swiss were bombarded with crosses)

Game 17: South Africa 0-3 Uruguay

Finally another team won by more than a 1 goal margin. Uruguay played brilliantly in my opinion. They exposed South Africa's weaknesses at the back and defended solidly, letting their opponents to shoot only from long range. Diego Forlan was once again excellent, this time playing just behind the striker. South Africa, meanwhile, just couldn't find any flow to their attacks and at times were shaky at the back as they were against Mexico 5 days ago. A draw against Mexico will almost certainly put Uruguay through to the Second Round and with this performance, I think it's very possible for them to progress. Bafana Bafana would have to dig deep and conjure up some magic to win their last game against France if they are to progress. Man of the Match: Diego Forlan (orchestrated his team's attacks most of the time, scored 2 goals and was involved in the other - a brilliant performance)

Game 12: New Zealand 1-1 Slovakia

What can I say? Slovakia played it tactically wrong. Went into the lead deservedly in the 50th minute and by that time looked good for the win as New Zealand barely looked like scoring. Then they started to ease off and instead of looking for that killer second goal, they opted to sit on their lead - and it backfired badly. The All Whites managed to score in the dying moments of the game thanks to some lacklustre defending by the Slovaks. This just makes Slovakia's chances to progress from the group stages much slimmer. Had they won, Italy and Paraguay would have to beat them to progress. New Zealand, honestly, don't look good enough to contain either Italy or Paraguay and I expect them to lose their next match against Italy. Slovakia, meanwhile, would rue their costly mistake today and it would be interesting to see how they respond against Paraguay in what could be a case of whoever wins that match would most probably qualify for the Second Round. Man of the Match: Vladimir Weiss (looked extremely good while dribbling and played some well measured passes to trouble the New Zealand defence)

Game 13: Ivory Coast 0-0 Portugal

This game was a huge disappointment. I had predicted this game to be a high scoring draw. Cristiano Ronaldo's shot that hit the post in the 11th minute only gave false hope that it would be an end-to-end game. Ronaldo, as I expected, didn't perform well and was largely anonymous throughout the game. The Ivorians controlled the game in midfield but failed to produce any clear-cut chances while Portugal never looked anywhere near the team that finished fourth in 2006. Both teams would need to drastically improve. Ivory Coast meet the Samba Boys next while Portugal meet North Korea in a game they must win as they face the Brazilians in their last game. Man of the Match: Gervinho (proved the only player that provided some spark when having the ball at his feet in a match that was excruciatingly frustrating for fans to watch)

Game 14: Brazil 2-1 North Korea

Wow! Not wow for Brazil but wow for the minnows of the World Cup. Absolutely amazing defensive performance in the first half to frustrate the Samba Boys. Very organized, disciplined, spirited, and determined display from the team that was an unknown quantity before the tournament started. Striker Jong Tae-Se, who promised to score in every game, was a real handful and looked like the Asian version of Carlos Tevez - hardworking, strong, and holds up the ball well. Brazil looked frustrated before Maicon opened the scoring with his "strike". He'll definitely claim he meant to shoot it from that tight angle but I think he wanted to cross. Certainly looked spectacular, though. Robinho was excellent throughout and was Brazil's best player but at least Ji Yun-Nam got a memorable story to tell his kids that he scored in the World Cup against the mighty Brazil. Brazil would need to step up their game against Ivory Coast while North Korea would be happy to display the same kind of performance as they did today against Portugal. Man of the Match: Robinho (had a few chances himself, got an assist for the second goal, and Brazil looked dangerous whenever he gets the ball in the final third)

Game 9: Netherlands 2-0 Denmark

One of my top 5 picks got off to a rather sluggish start in my opinion. The scoreline is flattering as the Dutch didn't show much of their true class they showed in warm-up friendlies but the clean sheet was a sign that they are defending better than usual. Having said that, the Danes didn't threaten much while going forward. Arjen Robben was clearly missed as the Netherlands never played a high tempo throughout the match and Robin van Persie was off form today. Wesley Sneijder's precise pass in the lead-up to their second goal was a cameo of what the Dutch are truly capable of, though. Netherlands need to improve offensively against Japan next while Denmark would need to do much much better overall against Cameroon. Man of the Match: Nigel de Jong (rather lucky that he didn't get sent off with a bad tackle in the first half but was solid as rock in midfield to keep the Danes at bay)

Game 10: Japan 1-0 Cameroon

Honestly, I didn't see this one coming. Japan were in very poor form just before the World Cup while Cameroon were, in my opinion, the second best African team after Ivory Coast at this tournament. The game lacked chances and Japan took advantage of what was handed to them. Poor defending led Cameroon to concede six minutes before halftime. Japan then used pure determination and grit to hold on to their lead as Cameroon found it difficult to break down the Blue Samurai defence. In the end, Cameroon coach Paul le Guen's decision to start superstar striker Samuel Eto'o on the right flank proved a gamble that didn't pay off as he struggled to get going in the game while Alexander Song's absence in midfield was clearly missed as Cameroon lacked the bite that was needed. Japan would need to show the same resiliency against the Dutch if they are to realise their target of progressing to the Second Round while Cameroon would have to come up with better tactics in a must-win game against the Danes next. Man of the Match: Yuki Nakazawa (showed composure and organized the Japanese defence very well)

Game 11: Italy 1-1 Paraguay

A fairly even match and I'm pretty sure Paraguay would be the happier of the 2 sides as Italy were thwarted after piling some pressure on the South Americans towards the end. Despite all the talk about the Italian squad as "old" and fielding a few veterans today, Italy showed fairly high tempo at the beginning of the game but lacked the cutting edge when it mattered. Paraguay took the lead against the run of play and defended very well after that but a goalkeeping error (again!) gave the Italians the equaliser. Defensively, both teams were very good and both goals were due to rare defensive lapses. The 2006 champions would need to be better offensively in their next match against New Zealand but if they maintain the same level of play like today, I think they'll beat the All Whites pretty comfortably. Paraguay, meanwhile, would have to be more adventurous if they are to get maximum points against Slovakia in their next match. Man of the Match: Fabio Cannavaro (partly to blame for Paraguay's goal but still had the pace to stop strikers despite being 36 years old, tackled cleanly as always and read Paraguay's passes very well throughout the match)

Slovenia Lucky, Serbia Disappoint, and Germany Go On A Rampage

Game 6: Algeria 0-1 Slovenia

This was by far the worst game of the 2010 World Cup so far. It was downright boring. Both teams certainly lacked quality and Slovenia, being the better side on paper, really disappointed me with their defensive mindset. Another day, another goalkeeping error. Algeria's goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi couldn't stop what looked like an easy enough save to make from Robert Koren's shot. But then again, this result is good for fans as it forces England and USA to win their next match against Algeria and Slovenia, respectively. In truth, I don't see both of these teams stopping the English and the Americans from progressing. Man of the Match: Robert Koren (just because he scored the winning goal)

Game 7: Serbia 0-1 Ghana

For a team that topped their qualifying group that included France, Serbia were very disappointing. Defensively they were solid but that's to be expected with Nemanja Vidic and Branislav Ivanovic among the back four. Going forward Serbia have nowhere near the ability of the likes of Spain or Argentina but they were very very average in this game. Ghana, meanwhile, didn't really look good upfront as well but the determination from their players throughout the match was commendable but they clearly missed Michael Essien who would have provided the extra spark going forward. Man of the Match: Andre Ayew (nobody really stood out but he looked threatening at least on the left flank)

Game 8: Germany 4-0 Australia

By miles the most convincing performance of any team thus far by Germany. Their passing and movement off the ball was extremely pleasant to watch and they have clearly sounded a warning to other pre-tournament favourites like Spain, Brazil, and England. This was the way to play football. Absolutely great sleek passing at times plus very good teamwork by the Germans who could have scored 7 goals in the match. Australia defended suicidally at times trying to catch German players offside and were fortunate not to have conceded more. If Germany continue playing like this, their next opponents, Serbia, would be beaten easily too but by a narrower margin. The Socceroos would have to defend much better and find that killer final pass more often against Ghana. But without Tim Cahill, it's a very tough task ahead and I'm not convinced that they will win. Man of the Match: Mesut Oezil (Lukas Podolski was close to getting this but Oezil's constant movement off the ball and smart runs on the blind side of defenders caused the Aussies a lot of problems)

South Korea Raise Eyebrows with Impressive Win, Argentina Wasteful in Front of Goal and Curse of English Goalkeepers Continue

Game 3: South Korea 2-0 Greece

Honestly, I'm surprised to see this result. Predicted a draw but South Korea showed Greece what younger legs can bring to the team. Dreadful defending led to South Korea's first goal from a set-piece while a bad error gifted the Koreans a second and in truth it could have been a bigger margin. But from what I saw, the Greeks look weary and I don't see them being a threat in the tournament at all. How I predicted them to progress to the second round is beyond me. Don't see them beating the Nigerians next up especially when they have not scored a goal in the World Cup. Man of the Match: Park Chu-Young

Game 4: Argentina 1-0 Nigeria

All eyes were on Argentina and Lionel Messi to see how they would perform in this tournament and in my opinion they were solid enough and deserved their win. Their attacks were very fluent and the Special One really performed in national colours this time. Had it not been for Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama's saves, Messi could have had a hat-trick and Argentina might have won by 4 or 5 goals in truth. Nigeria had decent half chances of their own but they were quite simply outplayed by Argentina who never really got out of second gear. That being said, Argentina would have to be at their best against the Koreans next if they are to confirm their place in the second round. Man of the Match: Vincent Enyeama

Game 5: England 1-1 USA

By far the most entertaining match of the tournament so far. A lot of chances for both teams to score but in the end, this was probably a fair result but I guess USA would be the happier of both teams. I doubted England's starting lineup with Emile Heskey starting but to me, he played well but really should have scored the opportunity he had in the second half. Steven Gerrard got England off to a great start but the Americans controlled the game after that. And as the title of this post suggests, English goalkeepers and silly errors just go hand-in-hand. Robert Green is now the scapegoat in the English press for making a simple save into a very embarrassing error. Very poor goalkeeping from Clint Dempsey's shot. On the other hand, Tim Howard's handling very good throughout the match and did his job perfectly when he needed to. England really need to improve offensively AND defensively for their next game against Algeria while the Americans must keep up their solid defence against Slovenia next because they have enough talent upfront to score goals. Bafana Bafana Delight Home Crowd While Les Blues Stumble to Unimpressive Draw

Game 1: South Africa 1-1 Mexico

South Africa got off to a decent start with a draw against a slightly fancied Mexico. Mexico got off to a good start with Giovanni Dos Santos their most dangerous player in the first half an hour. Mexico dominated play in the beginning but then fizzled out towards the end of the first half. South Africa impressed in the second half especially through counter attacks and went ahead through Siphiwe Tshabalala's superb strike into the top corner. They went on to miss 2 good chances before bad defending led to Rafael Marquez's equaliser. South Africa nearly snatched a win in the end but Katlego Mphela's effort on the 90th minute was unlucky to hit the outside of Mexico's goalpost. Decent result for the hosts but not a favourable one for Mexico as they face the French next. Man of the Match: Giovanni Dos Santos

Game 2: Uruguay 0-0 France

A drab draw in the end and in my opinion a very poor performance from the 2006 finalists. Played at a very slow pace especially in the second half. Franck Ribery had a very disappointing game by his standards. Uruguay organized their defence pretty well and Diego Forlan looked good throughout the match. Had a man sent off towards the end but managed to hold on for the draw. France need to do a whole lot better against Mexico if they are to progress to the next round while Uruguay need to find that killer instinct in their final attacking third of the field if they are to beat the hosts next. I Have a Fever!

No, no. It's not that kind of fever that makes you lose appetite, increases your body temperature and ensures you are bedridden for at least a day. No. I'm talking about this kind of fever.


Yeah, World Cup fever! It only happens once every 4 years. I'm excited! How can any football fan not be excited about the World Cup anyway? It's where the best footballers come and play their hearts out for a month to win the most important tournament in the football world. (Please ignore Jose Mourinho's comments about UEFA Champions League being more important than the World Cup. He's just talking nonsense.) So, this is the time where most, if not all, football fans will come up with their own list of favourites that would be champions come mid-July. So, here's my top 5 for this year's World Cup.

1. Spain
No doubt my favourite team to win this year. They are the current European champions, ranked number 2 in the world and have only lost once in their last 47 matches while winning 44 of them. That's a crazy record to bring to South Africa. They, in my opinion, play the best style of football currently and have one of the deadliest strike partnerships in David Villa and Fernando Torres. Add Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and Xabi Alonso who are all supplying the passes for them and you have a superb offensive team. Players to watch: Villa, Torres, Xavi.

2. Argentina

If you want a team that will definitely score goals, this is it. Here's Argentina's strikers' list: Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Diego Milito, and Martin Palermo. For the 2009-2010 season, Messi (47), Higuain (29), Tevez (29), Aguero (20), Milito (30), and Palermo (16) have combined for 181 goals. That's 30 goals on average per player! With that kind of attacking force to go with an easier side of the World Cup draw, I expect them to at least reach the semi-finals. Players to watch: Messi, Tevez.

3. Brazil

Yeah, I know what they say about current coach Dunga turning Brazil into a defensive team. I don't really think so. Now, they are a team with style AND substance. In qualifying, they are the top scorers and conceded the least amount of goals. So there's no way Brazil are a defensive team. With Julio Cesar, Maicon, Lucio, Kaka, Luis Fabiano, and Robinho, Brazil have a superstar in each main position of the team and with them being the current number 1 in the world, I doubt they'll falter before the semi-finals too. The only reason that they are my 3rd favourites is because they are in a really tough group with Ivory Coast and Portugal and are on the tougher side of the draw. Players to watch: Kaka, Robinho, Luis Fabiano.

4. Germany
They are THE underrated team among the favourites. Here's a fact: Since the 1982 World Cup, they have been champions once, runners-up three times, third-placed once and quarter-finalists twice. That's an amazing track record. They have a tricky group with Serbia, Ghana, and Australia but I'm sure they'll make it through topping it. Defence has always been solid and offense has steadily improved throughout the years. Semi-finals at best. Slight chance of meeting England in the Second Round and if they do, I still think Germany will beat them. Players to watch: Lukas Podolski, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philip Lahm.

5. Netherlands

Netherlands always impress me before a major tournament starts and end up disappointing me in the end. So, I hope that's not the case this year. They have one of the best teams in terms of talent. Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Robin van Persie, Ibrahim Affelay, and Rafael van der Vaart have the potential to rip defences apart with their creativity and lethal finishing. Again, they have impressed in pre-tournament friendlies and I hope they continue playing like they are right now. Quarter-finals at least. And if ever they meet Italy, I want them to rip Italy apart this time. Players to watch: Robben, Sneijder, van Persie.

p.s I DON'T want France to pass the Second Round no matter what. They never deserved a place in South Africa this year anyway. England, Portugal, and Italy come next after my top 5.
